The Legacy of Diaa Al-Awady: “Tayebat Diet” and the Missing Scientific Debate

By Ashraf Gaber*

The widespread controversy surrounding the passing of Dr. Diaa Al-Awady, creator of the so-called “Tayebat Diet,” was not merely a fleeting reaction to a tragic death (which medical reports attributed to a heart attack, possibly exacerbated by his avoidance of drinking water). Rather, it was a precise reflection of a structural flaw in how our societies engage with unconventional medical and scientific ideas.

Public opinion immediately fractured into two fiercely opposed camps: fervent supporters who viewed his theory as a lifeline denied to them by traditional medical institutions, and fierce critics who settled for ad hominem attacks and outright rejection without undertaking a rigorous scientific deconstruction of the proposition itself. Amidst the deafening noise of this polarization, the most fundamental pillar of the realm of knowledge was absent: “Scientific Debate.”

To understand this complex landscape, one must first examine the global and local contexts that allowed the “Tayebat Diet” and other unconventional systems to proliferate. The steady rise in the incidence of chronic and incurable diseases, coupled with the occasional inability of traditional treatment protocols and pharmaceutical giants to offer a “complete cure,” has bred frustration and despair among a broad segment of patients. Many available treatments have devolved into mere tools for “pain management” or “coexisting with the illness” rather than eradicating it. In this void laden with suffering, society’s susceptibility to clinging to any glimmer of hope, whether methodical or alternative, even if it contradicts medical tenets, becomes higher than ever.

It is precisely here that the role of sober scientific and media institutions emerges, a role we sorely missed in handling Dr. Al-Awady’s case. Instead of outright bans, unilateral warning statements, or social media bickering, the scene desperately lacked a “roundtable” and specialized debates. Dr. Al-Awady should have been invited to earnest, public discussions, bringing him face-to-face with the pioneers of Evidence-Based Medicine, therapeutic nutritionists, and internal medicine specialists.

The objective of such debates is not to “put the author of the idea on trial,” but to place the methodology itself under the microscope of public scrutiny and critique. A debate that questions clinical evidence, discusses the disparities between “anecdotal observation” and “peer-reviewed scientific research,” and systematically refutes claims with facts and figures. When patients witness this caliber of elevated discourse, one that champions truth and objective scientific dialectic, they evolve from being mere “emotional followers” of a camp into “conscious recipients” equipped with the tools to filter and evaluate.

Eradicating opposing ideas without scientifically dismantling them does not kill them; it merely lends them the allure of “victimhood” and pushes them to grow in closed circles, far from the oversight of science. Conversely, bringing them into the light and discussing them with open, critical minds is the sole guarantee to protect human lives on one hand, and to advance the trajectories of scientific research on the other.

The case of the late Dr. Diaa Al-Awady transcends his persona and his endeavors, confronting us with a pressing cultural and scientific imperative: our public life, our health, and the future of our generations desperately need to establish the rules of “Scientific Debate.” We need intellectual arenas where sincere viewpoints are respected, where the power of evidence rules over the authority of censorship, ensuring that science, and science alone, has the final word.
