Dubai: Merit Style – Sahar El-Alfy
Tunisian beauty expert and entrepreneur Safa Selmi grew up in an environment that breathes beauty; her mother founded the first beauty salon in the ancient city of Kairouan over four decades ago.
From Dubai, the crossroads of cultures and innovation, Safa continued her journey, transforming her family legacy into pioneering projects and brands. Her ambitions did not stop at providing traditional beauty services, but soared towards innovation. She introduced “Mirotrix” for safe hair treatments, and “Luxora,” which revolutionized the world of hair extensions with its “All in One” piece. In this interview conducted in Dubai by colleague Sahar Al-Alfi, Managing Editor of Merit Style, Safa Selmi, who holds a professional doctorate in cosmetology, opens her heart to recount chapters of her journey, her challenges, and her personal philosophy in the world of beauty.
Beginnings and Passion
How did your journey in the beauty world begin? And what attracted you to this field?
My journey in the beauty world began in childhood. My mother was the owner of the first beauty salon in our city, Kairouan, in Tunisia, more than forty years ago. We grew up inside this enchanting world and learned so much from its details, until beauty became an integral part of our lives and the formation of our personalities. Therefore, I can confidently say that beauty, for me, is not just a profession I practice, but a deep family legacy and an authentic passion I grew up with since childhood.
Was entering the beauty field a planned dream from the beginning, or did the idea come by pure chance?
It wasn’t a dream I sketched on paper from the start, but it was a world always close to me. It is the environment from which I absorbed my culture, and over time, this habitual closeness transformed into a genuine, deep-rooted passion, ultimately making beauty a fundamental pillar in my career and my entire life.

Challenges and Turning Points
What were the most prominent challenges you faced at the beginning of your journey? And how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was proving myself in a highly competitive market, especially as a woman managing and steering her own business. I faced many obstacles, but my firm belief that continuous learning, persistence, and hard work are the true keys to success is what pushed me forward. I treated every challenge I faced as a real opportunity for development, not as a hurdle halting my progress.
What achievement do you consider the true “turning point” in your career?
Obtaining my professional doctorate in cosmetology was undoubtedly a milestone in my career, but the real turning point materialized when I began formulating my own vision, turning years of experience into brands that bear my signature and philosophy in the beauty world.
Through the brand “Mirotrix,” I introduced a revolutionary concept for hair treatments based on safe formulas free of formalin and harmful chemicals. I am also incredibly proud of the “Luxora” brand, which offered innovative solutions in the field of hair extensions, most notably the All in One piece that gives a woman a natural, harmonious look as if it were a single piece. For me, true success is not merely measured by awards or popularity, but by our ability to transform ideas into living projects that leave a tangible impact.
Work Philosophy and Management
What distinguishes your brand and projects from others in the crowded beauty market?
I don’t just offer a service; I create an “integrated experience.” I fully believe that quality and innovation are the cornerstones of any sustainable success, which is why I prioritize the continuous development of products, keeping pace with the latest global technologies, while paying utmost attention to the finest details. My ultimate goal is for the client to receive true value and a final result they absolutely trust.
How do you balance the creative side of the art of beauty with the strict managerial side of the business world?
The equation is simple: creativity is the magnet that attracts the client, while wise management is the guarantee for the continuity of this success. I always strive to create a delicate balance between developing innovative ideas on one hand, and administrative planning, marketing, team building, and elevating customer service on the other. Success in any entrepreneurial project requires a harmonious blend of visionary dreaming and realistic management.
In your view, what are the most important qualities a woman must possess to succeed in managing her own project?
Four essential qualities: self-confidence, strict discipline, profound patience, and the capacity and passion for continuous learning. Success does not knock on our door overnight; it comes willingly to those who believe in their abilities and continue their pursuit despite all challenges.
Do you believe that success relies primarily on talent, or on diligence and continuity?
Talent gives a person a beautiful and distinctive starting point, but alone it is not enough to reach the top. Diligence, continuity, and continuous self-development are the real elements that forge success and ensure its sustainability.
Inspiration and Future Vision
You had an experience with the media; How do you evaluate it? And where do you see yourself in this field in the future?
Media was an exceptional and important station in my life; it gave me extensive experience in the art of communicating with the public and delivering messages in an impactful format. Today, I invest this experience in content creation, training, and marketing. If a media opportunity arises on the horizon to present purposeful content that serves women’s issues and entrepreneurship, I would be absolutely delighted to answer that call.
Who are the people that left the greatest impact on your professional and personal journey?
First and foremost, my mother; she was and remains my first role model from whose school I learned the value of commitment, the depth of passion, and the mastery of work. Also, the boundless support from my family, my husband, my friends, and my clients has had a profound impact on my journey; encouragement and trust are the fuel that gives a person tremendous energy to continue and evolve.
What is your personal philosophy on beauty? And do you think outer beauty alone is enough?
My philosophy, in short, is that “true beauty stems from within.” Self-confidence, refined morals, and psychological comfort are all factors that automatically shine and reflect on one’s external appearance. As for cosmetics, it is merely a tool to highlight this latent natural beauty, not a means to obliterate a person’s identity and change their features.
How do you evaluate the evolution of the beauty sector in our Arab region?
The sector is witnessing a massive boom; today’s client has become more aware and educated, and is seriously looking for high quality and results that look natural. Therefore, innovation, continuous learning, and keeping up with the modern technological revolution have become absolute necessities for anyone aspiring to secure a leading position in this field.
What is your message to young women wishing to enter the world of beauty and entrepreneurship?
My advice to them: Invest in “knowledge” before chasing “fame,” and make sure to build your names on solid foundations of quality and credibility. Do not let the fear of beginnings stop you; every great achievement started with a simple step, and with patience and continuous development, dreams will become a tangible reality.
Decisions and Dreams
What is the boldest decision you have made in your career so far?
My boldest decision was refusing to settle for merely providing traditional beauty services, and heading towards building brands bearing my name, developing professional products, and breaking into the world of training. It was a massive responsibility I placed on my shoulders, but it was an adventure worth all the effort.
Is there a dream that still occupies you and that you are striving to achieve?
I dream that my brands will soar globally, and that I succeed in establishing a specialized international academy in the arts of beauty and hair styling, so I can contribute even more to training and empowering ambitious women.
Where do you see Safa Selmi five years from now?
I see myself, having solidified the position of my brands “Mirotrix” and “Luxora” as unrivaled leading names in the Middle East and the world, alongside launching a specialized international academy with branches spanning several countries. I aspire to continue my mission of empowering women to become successful entrepreneurs, not just beauty specialists.
Do you have future plans to expand or launch new products?
Definitely, expansion plans never stop. We are working on developing a new suite of professional products, expanding our activities in the vocational training sector, and penetrating new regional and global markets.
In conclusion; What is your message to every woman who dreams of starting her own business but fears the specter of failure?
I tell her: “Do not wait for fear to dissipate; Start your journey while it accompanies you.” Every inspiring success story began with a bold step, and every experience you live, whether you succeed or stumble, will teach you a lesson that brings you one step closer to your dream. Believe in your abilities, work hard in silence, and never allow anyone to set a ceiling on your lofty ambitions.

One word that describes your personality?
Ambitious.
Success for you is?
To leave a tangible positive impact on others’ lives, and to create true value that outlasts me.
Your biggest source of inspiration?
My mother, first of all, then every success story woven with struggle and tireless work.
A quote you believe in and never leaves your mind?
“Success is not a stroke of luck; Success is a decision, action, and continuity.”
The decision that most changed the course of your life?
My decision to invest in my self-development and build my own name and independent brands.
A dream you wish to see the light soon?
The global reach of “Mirotrix” and “Luxora,” and the establishment of the International Beauty Academy.
If time went back; Would you choose the same field?
Absolutely; this field didn’t just grant me professional success, but it gave me a “mission” and a real opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
